Naked Run ‘The First’ 2007 Clare Valley Riesling
The Naked Run Clare Valley Riesling was named ‘The First’ as it was the first wine produced under the Naked Run Label. The 2007 vintage is our third vintage of this wine. Made from 100% Clare Valley free run juice, the fruit was sourced from a single vineyard located at Sevenhill in the heart of the Clare Valley. The vineyard is situated 475 metres above sea level, a relatively cool site for the region. The vines are grown on red-grey loam over slate subsoil which produces mineral characteristics.
The 2007 growing season was one of the hardest on record with our rain fall for the year only 400mm compared with the average of 650mm. The sub soil was very dry at the start of the growing season. However a large rainfall event in January 100mm in 3 days and some minimal irrigation helped and our yields were only slightly down on the previous year.
The fruit was machine harvested at night when the fruit was at its coolest, and processed as quickly as possible to get it off skins. It was pressed, cold settled for 2 days then racked for fermentation. The wine was fermented with the yeast strain PDM at around 15oC until dry, then stabilized, filtered and bottled. The 2007 Naked Run Riesling ‘The First’ displays lifted lemon, lime and orange blossom aromas with citrus characters and a steely mineral acid backbone which will allow this wine to age elegantly. We at Naked Run are delighted with our 2007 Riesling.
